There are two types within the breed: the German type bred for work and used as police dogs and the American type used as family pets and playing companions for children. Working qualities in the American type are not stressed much. Both types are good at tracking, herding, competitive obedience, and other sports. German variety of the breed is not recommended for novice owners, as these dogs are very independent and self-assured. They need a firm hand in training.
